INDEPENDENT ALLIANCE CANDIDATES FOR 2010
On Thursday 1st May the Independent Alliance contested 10 wards across the borough. These candidates received huge popular support and between them polled around 10,000 votes. This support resulted in 4 of the 10 candidates being elected, one was re-elected and a further 4 came second including Steve Pattison who was within a whisker of winning, in fact it needed 2 recounts to establish that there were only 10 votes in it! The final candidate put up a creditable performance by beating the conservative.

The next local elections will be held on Thursday 6th May 2010 and the Independent Alliance again intends to field candidates across the borough. A number of candidates who stood in May 2008 have already indicated that they intend standing again. A number of other individuals have also expressed an interest in standing, however, we are keen to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in the independent movement and who would be willing to stand in 2010.

As in previous years we will continue our attempts to unify the opposition to Labour but sadly we do not hold out much hope as both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats continue to stifle any attempts to remove Labour.

The South Tyneside Progressives are committed to continue working with the Independent Alliance and both parties will work closely to ensure that they do not field candidates against each other in the same ward thereby ensuring Labour do not sneak in via the backdoor.

Sadly the same cannot be said of the so called ‘Real Independents’ a group of just 2 individuals led by former Independent Alliance Cllr. George Elsom (who spat his dummy out when he was not allowed to run the Alliance like a political party) and supported by former Independent Alliance Cllr. Terry Haram and it seems that they will continue their approach of falling out with any and everybody. This inability to work with anybody combined with their disastrous showing at the polls is likely to result in them becoming increasingly isolated
